Abstract. The Meratus people reside in the valleys of the Meratus Mountains, which extends through ten administrative regions. The focus of the study is the characteristics of the Meratus people and their ideological concepts underlying their material culture. The purpose of this study is to build an ethno-archaeological research model that can be applied to social systems of the same or similar cultural system. Thus, the research method used is descriptive-comparative with ethno-archaeological reasoning, whereas data collecting were carried out by survey and interviews. The results indicate that in the northern region of the Meratus Mountains lives the Balangan, Halong and Bukit people who practice similar culture system. Similarity aspects of their cultural system that can be used as the foundation structure of an ethno-archaeological research model in the Meratus Mountains region are ideologies of the universe, the one-year cycle of shifting cultivation and harvest ceremonies, solidarity, life-cycle ceremonies, death-cycle ceremonies, ritual instruments, and types of offerings.
